The GPA UK Payroll Summit 2020
Last week, we exhibited at the GPA UK Payroll Summit 2020. Topics that were concentrated on included challenges facing employers in 2020 and onwards.
The event was held on the cusp of the COVID-19 being named a world pandemic. Mel and the team did a great job of providing hand sanitiser and filmed all the sessions, for those who did not attend.
Payroll Topics 2020
There were some brilliant topics at the event, Payroll Technology, HR and Payroll working together more closely, Expat Challenges and Global Payroll Challenges. Of course, the COVID-19 topic came up and a panel was put together to talk about COVID-19 and payroll at the end of the day.
Global Payroll Leadership
Graham Jenkins from The Consultant Connection Limited, talk on ‘Global Payroll Leadership’ was very interesting. Graham pointed out that if you were a lead in Global payroll the burden of risk management was on you to get right. He stated you needed a fundamental set of rules, standards and strategy and always be audit-ready. He continued to say that you couldn’t personally know each country fiscal rules, but you should have strong rules and regulations across the board to keep things compliant. These standards need to be championed by you as a leader.
Define Your Global Payroll Strategy
Graham then said you needed to define your Global Payroll Strategy. If you were creating a new strategy it was important to define why. Is it to save money through outsourcing etc.
Another interesting point he raised about the Payroll strategy was the need to involved HR. HR now holds data that payroll needs; therefore, it cannot just be payroll you need both. It will be a poor payroll strategy if you do not include HR.
Outsourcing Your Payroll
When choosing to outsource your payroll you need to define why – Jenkins continued. Is it to save money, or to streamline processes? He stated there was a clear difference with solutions. Were you looking for a technology partner? Or a payroll partner? He warned there was a clear difference and many people did not realize this when choosing a partner. Technology partners will literally supply you the software and that is it. Payroll partners will keep your payroll compliant in each country. He stated you could not expect outsourcing partners to deal with internal standards, that was up to you. Knowing your payroll issues is key to a good partnership, you need to be aware of them all, and then feed them back to your payroll outsourcing partner so there is no nasty surprises for anyone. Clear honest communication is key to a good partnership.
